Halter training

March 10th, 2010

I was asked what I meant at the end of my last blog. When I said don’t let them walk over you I mean don’t let your horse push you or pull you when you have them in hand have your horse respect your space. If you ask the horse to stand near you or away from you he should stand quite and still not be walking around you in a circle or pushing you over. If you are leading him some where have your horse under control not out on the end of your lead like a kite on a string but nice and calm

Halter trained horses

March 10th, 2010

When you teach a horse to lead it is the time to teach them other things to. I have had some young horses brought here lately that are halter broke that have a lot of problems from being scare of people and no respect for the person on the end of the lead rope. I feel a halter trained horse should be taught to lunge and have their feet picked up,stand while you brush them and you should be able to walk around them plus they should load in a trailer. So many times people just drag a young horse around and say you can lead them it doesn’t take that much more time to teach them to be caught and face up to you and stand so you can put your halter on them quietly and safe. If you take a few minutes a day and pick up their feet when the shoer comes it will be a good day for both of them and you too. Horse that are scare are dangerous so is one that is disrespectful a horse does not have to be afaird of you to be respectful of you. A horse that respects you does so because he trust you and is looking toward you for leadership. When a horse has no leader they are confused and nervous so be a leader for your horse and don’t let them down by letting them walk over you.

horseshoeing

March 9th, 2010

The other day I had a guy call needing his horse shod for a sale. He informed me that he had it done three days before but it didn’t look right. So I went down to the fair ground to take a look and what I saw was the worst job of shoeing I have seen in a long time. None of the feet were the same when I trim them I took off about 2inches off three of the feet and 3 inches off one. Why do people think that there is nothing to shoeing horses when it takes training and education plus a lot of practice. There is a big difference from putting iron on and doing it right. When you hire some one to shoe or trim your horse make sure they know what they are doing for your horse benefit. Don’t just hire the cheapist or the first one you find without asking around to see if they know what they are doing. Your spending your money and the health of your horse is your job. Shoeing does not harm a horse’s feet but bad trimming or shoeing does so hire a good shoer next time and stay with them as he will get to know your horses feet and your horse will learn to trust him.

I was wondering why people who know nothing about horses think they know everything about horses. yesterday I was going to pick up a horse for training and when I got to the place where the horse was it was a junk yard of a place no place to back my trailer up to run this unbroken horse into or any place to catch him of course the people wanted me to rope the horse in a wire pen that was falling down when I refused they were mad and rude to me for refusing to hurt myself and the horse. Some people should not own horses just like these people their horse was underfed, hadn’t had her feet done in 8 yrs. I felt sorry for the horse but I was not going to add more injury to it to get it out of there but I’m the bad guy for refusing to hurt the horse and myself.  Just a little venting on my part, have a nice day to all of the good horse people out there.

Horse Tip

November 13th, 2008

I would like to past on my feeling on leaving your halter on your horse. I think this is a bad practise for the safety of your horse. When you turn your horse loose with his halter on it can and does get caught on things. I saw a young filly turned out in a pasture with her halter on. She was found the next day with it caught on a standpipe she had a dislocated jaw and need 160 stitches in her face. She had a hard time eating and look terrible. She was put down about a year later. I also meet a mare that was crippled because she had her halter left on. The owners had turned her loose with her halter on and went to town when they returned the next day they found her with her hind foot caught on the side of the halter she had fought it for a long and pulled her hip out of place she was no longer a useful horse and had to live a life of pain. These are some of the worst things that can happen but they do happen so next time you want to leave your halters on think of they safety. Try to make your horse as safe as you can it is our responsibility to take care of them.

This is where we stayed in Kingman AZ. This is the Blake Ranch  RV. park they have corrals for your horses and a full RV park plus they have one cabin you can rent for the night There is a truck stop down the hill from the park with a good place to eat. there are showers for you also but not in the cabin you have to walk over to the park to shower and use the restrooms but it isn’t far.so if you are going through Kingman AZ. and need to stop with your horses check at the Blake Ranch it is a nice place to stay.
