I was asked what I meant at the end of my last blog. When I said don’t let them walk over you I mean don’t let your horse push you or pull you when you have them in hand have your horse respect your space. If you ask the horse to stand near you or away from you he should stand quite and still not be walking around you in a circle or pushing you over. If you are leading him some where have your horse under control not out on the end of your lead like a kite on a string but nice and calm
When you teach a horse to lead it is the time to teach them other things to. I have had some young horses brought here lately that are halter broke that have a lot of problems from being scare of people and no respect for the person on the end of the lead rope. I feel a halter trained horse should be taught to lunge and have their feet picked up,stand while you brush them and you should be able to walk around them plus they should load in a trailer. So many times people just drag a young horse around and say you can lead them it doesn’t take that much more time to teach them to be caught and face up to you and stand so you can put your halter on them quietly and safe. If you take a few minutes a day and pick up their feet when the shoer comes it will be a good day for both of them and you too. Horse that are scare are dangerous so is one that is disrespectful a horse does not have to be afaird of you to be respectful of you. A horse that respects you does so because he trust you and is looking toward you for leadership. When a horse has no leader they are confused and nervous so be a leader for your horse and don’t let them down by letting them walk over you.
The other day I had a guy call needing his horse shod for a sale. He informed me that he had it done three days before but it didn’t look right. So I went down to the fair ground to take a look and what I saw was the worst job of shoeing I have seen in a long time. None of the feet were the same when I trim them I took off about 2inches off three of the feet and 3 inches off one. Why do people think that there is nothing to shoeing horses when it takes training and education plus a lot of practice. There is a big difference from putting iron on and doing it right. When you hire some one to shoe or trim your horse make sure they know what they are doing for your horse benefit. Don’t just hire the cheapist or the first one you find without asking around to see if they know what they are doing. Your spending your money and the health of your horse is your job. Shoeing does not harm a horse’s feet but bad trimming or shoeing does so hire a good shoer next time and stay with them as he will get to know your horses feet and your horse will learn to trust him.
